EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - Fresno State (1-3) fell 19-14 at UConn (2-4) on Saturday evening at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field.
Fresno State saw touchdown scores by seniors Nikko Remigio and Jordan Mims, and a 10-tackle performance again by senior linebacker Levelle Bailey.
"Conference play is about to start and we need to get a lot better," said head coach Jeff Tedford. "We had a couple offensive linemen go down during the game. We need definitely need a gut check on who we are and what we are doing. We need to be tougher in tight games. We had too many penalties and we didn't execute well enough. We are going back to the drawing board before we start conference play."
How it happened
The first quarter was dull with just 72 yards of total offense by both teams combined. UConn had a 3-0 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
Fresno State got its spark on special teams as Nikko Remigio returned a punt 87 yards for a touchdown, giving Fresno State a 7-3 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Bulldogs came out firing from the break, stringing together a five play, 62-yard scoring drive over 2:03. Running back Jordan Mims punched it in from the wildcat play at the one yard line. Fresno State recovered its second fumble of the game, but UConn quickly got the ball back off an interception and turned that into points with a 5-yard touchdown pass. UConn opted for the two-point conversion, but was not successful to leave Fresno State with a 14-12 lead with 5:18 left in the third.
UConn would score the only points of the fourth quarter with a late 17-yard touchdown run by Devontae Houston to cap its 19-14 victory.
