SAN DIEGO – Haley Cavinder's second 30-point game of her career wasn't enough for Fresno State on Saturday afternoon, falling to San Diego State 77-69 at Viejas Arena. The Aztecs shot 50.8 percent from the field, tied for the highest allowed by the Bulldogs this season.
Haley Cavinder poured in a game-high 30 points on 8-of-21 shooting, going 4-of-9 from distance. She also finished 10-of-10 from the free throw line and drew 12 of the Aztecs 17 fouls.
SDSU had three in double figures, led by senior Mercedes Staples who had 21 points on Senior Day
How It Happened
Fresno State scored the game's opening five points before San Diego State went on a 17-2 run to go up 10. The 'Dogs pulled three back before the end of the quarter and Jessica Peterson got the deficit down to five with a layup to start the period. Fresno State, though, missed its next seven shot attempts and the Aztecs went on an 11-0 run to go up 16 with 5:18 remaining in the half.
From that point, Haley Cavinder took over, scoring or assisting on the final 17 Bulldog points as Fresno State pulled to within 38-33 at the half. Trailing by 13, with two and a half minutes on the clock, Cavinder stepped into a 3, and then found Tamia Stricklin 3's on back-to-back possessions as the 'Dogs cut into the Aztecs' lead.
Fresno State got within two with under four minutes to go in the third quarter but SDSU countered with an 8-2 stretch to close the period. Like the second, Haley got into attack mode in the fourth, this time scoring the first nine points in the quarter but the 'Dogs were unable to get the lead below five during the final five minutes of the game. Haley scored or assisted on 18 of the Bulldogs' 23 points in the fourth.
