SAN DIEGO - The Diamond 'Dogs fell 4-0 at No. 22 San Diego on Saturday evening at Fowler Park on the second day of the Tony Gwynn Legacy Tournament.
Fresno State (3-3), who was shut out for the first time since March 13, 2021 against New Mexico, was held to five singles and only eight baserunners in the contest.
On the mound, reigning Mountain West Pitcher of the Week Ixan Henderson went five innings limiting USD to three hits, two earned runs, two walks and struck out five.
Trevor Garcia came on in relief to work the final three innings allowing a pair of runs and struck out two.
How It Happened
The 'Dogs notched three of their five hits in the second inning with base knocks by Mason Grotto, Blake Wink and Vinny Bologna. Seeking to give the 'Dogs an early lead, Grotto looked to score on Bologna's single to left, but was thrown out at home by San Diego left fielder Jack Costello.
The Toreros, who were ranked No. 22 in this week's Perfect Game rankings, responded getting the scoring started with a solo home run in the bottom of the frame and added RBI base hits in the fifth and seventh innings for a 3-0 lead.
A solo home run by Angelo Peraza extended San Diego's lead to 4-0 in the eighth as the 'Dogs saw a double play in the ninth end the contest.
