FRESNO, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs head to the Tony Gwynn Legacy Tournament in San Diego taking on Utah, No. 22 San Diego and Hawaii this weekend.

A look at the Utah Utes
Utah is off to a 2-0-1 start to the season with a series win over Loyola Marymount. The Utes, led by first-year head coach Gary Henderson, are coming off a 17-33 season in 2021 with a 7-23 mark in the Pac-12 tying for 10th in the league.
Picked to finish 11th in the Pac-12 preseason poll, the Utes are led by Pacific transfer Chase Anderson who is hitting .462 with four RBI and five runs scored along with stealing a pair of bases. Friday starter Matthew Sox went 4.2 innings in his season debut allowing four earned runs while striking out five and walking one.
A look at the No. 22 San Diego Toreros
San Diego comes into the weekend ranked No. 22 by Perfect Game and is 3-1 with series win over Oregon. The Toreros went 33-12 last season with a 19-8 mark in the WCC finishing second in the conference.
Selected third in the WCC preseason poll, USD is led by sophomore Jack Costello who is hitting .500 while the Toreros are hitting .304 as a team. Sophomore left-hander Brycen Mautz tossed 5.2 innings while striking out 12 last week against the Ducks to earn the win.
A look at the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors
Hawaii is 2-2 on the young season after splitting a four-game home series against Washington State. The Rainbow Warriors went 24-26 in 2021 and finished eighth in the Big West going 16-24 in the Big West.
Chosen sixth in the Big West preseason poll, Hawaii is led by Cal Poly transfer Cole Cabrera hitting .357 with a .526 on-base percentage. As a pitching staff, Hawaii has a 3.50 ERA and is holding opponents to a .214 average from the plate.
Batesole sitting among top 20 in most wins among active head coaches
Through the first week of the season, Coach Batesole sits 18th among active head coaches in career wins with 871 victories and on Sunday will see number seven on the list, Rich Hill of Hawaii, who currently has 1,081 victories and is in his first season on the islands after coming over from San Diego.
New 'Dogs in action
Nine Bulldogs are in their first year at Fresno State this spring with five transfers joining four freshmen.
Included in that group are pitchers Roman Angelo (CSU Bakersfield), Zach Statzer (RHP - San Joaquin Delta College), Trevor Garcia (RHP - Allan Hancock College) and a pair of junior college infielders in Payton Allen (College of Sequoias) & Travis Welker (Allan Hancock College).

- The Diamond 'Dogs are coming off their first loss of the season falling 8-4 at Cal Poly on Tuesday.
- The 'Dogs got off to their first 3-0 start since 2018 after sweeping UC Riverside last weekend outscoring the Highlanders, 27-6 in three games,
- The Bulldogs make their return to the Tony Gwynn Legacy for the first time since 2019 where they won all three contests to get out to a 5-1 start to the season.
