SAN DIEGO - Despite being held to one hit, the 'Dogs fell 2-1 to Utah on Friday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium in the Tony Gwynn Legacy Tournament.
With Utah starting pitcher Matthew Sox taking a no-hitter into the ninth inning, Josh Lauck broke up the no-hit bid with one out on a single to center field.
In addition to Lauck's single, Andrew Kachel drew three walks while Ivan Luna drove in the 'Dogs lone run for his team-leading sixth RBI of the season.
On the mound, southpaw Jake Dixon tossed 5.2 innings allowing five hits, two earned runs, walked three and struck out three.
Kyle Pruhsmeier came on in relief for the final out of the sixth inning stranding a pair of runners before Zach Statzer tossed the final three innings limiting Utah to two hits and struck out three.
How It Happened
Utah got the scoring started with a solo home run in the third inning by Dakota Duffalo and after second baseman Payton Allen saved a pair of runs in the fourth with a diving catch, the Utes tacked on a run in the fifth on an RBI groundout to take a 2-0 lead.
After Lauck broke up Sox's no-hit bid, Kachel and Zach Morgan followed with back-to-back walks to load the bases for Luna.
Luna came through with an RBI groundout to second base that moved pinch-runner and the tying run, Nikoh Mitchell to third base. Looking to tie up the game, Tommy Hopfe was sent down on strikes to end the 'Dogs comeback bid.
