FRESNO, Calif. - Completing its first shutout since 2020, Fresno State blanked Portland, 1-0 on Saturday evening at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (5-5) evened the series against Portland (8-2) with the pitching duo of Ixan Henderson, Kyle Pruhsmeier and Nikoh Mitchell combining for a three-hit shutout and 14 strikeouts.
Offensively, the Bulldogs slugged out nine base hits with Mason Grotto going 3-for-4 while Matt Ottino, making his first start of the season, added a single, double and scored the game's lone run.
Zach Morgan added a pair of singles and drove in Ottino for his seventh RBI of the season.
Henderson tossed a career-high six innings, struck out nine and limited the Pilots to three singles to earn his second win of the season.
Pruhsmeier worked a spotless seventh and Mitchell made his first relief appearance of the season throwing a perfect final two innings for his first save of 2022.
How It Happened
The 'Dogs struck first and for the game's lone run in the bottom of the third when Ottino and Ben Newton laced back-to-back one-out singles and Morgan kept the offense going with a two-out single back up the middle to drive home Ottino for a 1-0 lead.
The Pilots threatened to tie or take the lead in the fifth loading the bases on a single, walk and hit by pitch, but a strikeout of leadoff hitter Henry Muench ended the threat as no Pilot got farther than second base the remainder of the contest.
