'Dogs top Pilots, 7-1 to win series

FRESNO, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs defeated Portland, 7-1 on Sunday afternoon to take the series over the Pilots at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.

Fresno State (6-5) scored mulltiple runs in three of the first six innings and limited Portland (8-3) to one early run before shutting them out for the final eight innings.

Zach Morgan led the way offensively with a three-hit performance smashing his sixth double of the season and a run scored and RBI.

Josh Lauck crushed his team-leading third home run of the year, scored a pair of runs and stole a base.

On the mound, right-hander Roman Angelo made his first start as a Bulldog tossing six innings while holding Portland to seven hits, one run, no walks and struck out two.

Tommy Hopfe, Trevor Garcia and Cooper Bergman each worked an inning apiece to close out the game.

How It Happened
Portland scored its lone run of the day in the top of the first on a two-out RBI single to left by Briley Knight and after a wild pitch put a pair of Pilots in scoring position for Gabe Skoro, a highlight reel play by Blake Wink at second base saved a pair of runs and keep the visitors' lead at 1-0.

The 'Dogs took the lead in the second thanks to Travis Welker's two-run RBI single as the Bulldogs took advantage of a Portland fielding error to extend the inning.

A single by Wink and a walk by Welker put a pair of 'Dogs on base for Lauck in the fourth who delivered a three-run home run to left-center to push the Bulldogs in front, 5-1.

Getting two more runs in the sixth off RBI base hits from Morgan and Ivan Luna, the 'Dogs led 7-1 as the bullpen kept the Pilots off the board the remainder of the afternoon.
