'Dogs win high-scoring affair, 10-7

FRESNO, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs survived a high-scoring contest against Hawaii on Tuesday evening defeating the Rainbow Warriors, 10-7 at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.

Fresno State (18-18) used three multi-run innings over the first five frames and held on for a three-run victory over its former WAC rival.

The Bulldogs totaled 13 hits in the contest with three coming from Ivan Luna along with two apiece from Andrew Kachel, Zach Morgan and Travis Welker.

On the pitching side, the 'Dogs used seven hurlers with Ixan Henderson making the start and Jake Dixon coming on in the ninth for the save.

In between, Nikoh Mitchell, Alex Kendrick, Zach Statzer, Will Springer and Trevor Garcia saw action with Mitchell earning his first win of the season along with being his first career victory since March 1, 2020.

How It Happened
The Rainbow Warriors got the scoring started with a bang in the top of the first getting a leadoff home run from Cole Cabrera.

The 'Dogs quickly answered back with a five-run frame getting started with a sacrifice fly from Vinny Bologna, a two-run RBI double by Payton Allen and two more runs came home on a single by Ben Newton as a Hawaii outfield error allowed Allen as well as Josh Lauck to score.

Hawaii responded with three runs in the top of the second to cut the 'Dogs lead to 5-4. After being held scoreless in the second and third innings, a three-run fourth put the Bulldogs back up four. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Morgan and Luna followed by an RBI single by Tommy Hopfe provided the scoring.

As they did all game, the Rainbow Warriors kept plugging away answering back with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth off Kendrick to cut the 'Dogs lead back down to one at 8-7.

Two more runs came in for the 'Dogs in the bottom of the frame on back-to-back RBI singles by Welker and Kachel to put the Bulldogs back up three.

Statzer, Springer, Garcia and Dixon combined to hold the Warriors scoreless over the final four innings limiting the visitors to three hits and stranded five baserunners.
