FRESNO, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs saw their five-game midweek winning streak come to an end on Tuesday evening falling to Sacramento State, 11-9 at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Falling behind 7-0 after two-and-half innings, Fresno State (24-25) fought back scoring in five of its final seven innings and brought the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but came up short.
The Bulldogs edged Sacramento State, 12-11 in hits with four 'Dogs finishing with multiple hits led by Payton Allen who registered his second four-hit contest this season.
Andrew Kachel, Blake Wink and Travis Welker all added two base knocks apiece with Welker belting his first career home run as a Bulldog. Ivan Luna added a three-run home run for his team-leading 11th long ball.
On the pitching side, Alex Kendrick made his first start of 2022 and fourth of his career tossing 2.2 innings. Matt Ottino, Zach Statzer, Robbie Peters and Kyle Pruhsmeier closed out the game with Pruhsmeier matching his career high with four strikeouts.
How It Happened
A seven-run third inning for the Hornets gave the visitors a comfortable lead out of the gate, but the Bulldogs quickly answered back putting up a four-run frame for themselves. A leadoff laser home run by Welker got the scoring started and after a triple by Kachel and hit by pitch to Josh Lauck, Luna sent a three-run jack to right field.
The Hornets tacked on two runs in the fifth, but the 'Dogs matched them with single runs in the fifth and sixth getting an RBI single by Allen in the fifth and Welker scored on a wild pitch in the sixth.
A sacrifice fly by the Hornets in the seventh pushed their lead to 10-6, but the 'Dogs refused to go away scoring two in the bottom of the inning on a two-out RBI double to left by Kachel.
After a scoreless eighth, the Hornets added an insurance run in the ninth on a solo home run by first baseman Martin Vincelli-Simard, but as they did all game, the 'Dogs answered back. Wink scored on a passed ball that got away from catcher Dawsen Bacho as Lauck was able to safely reach base on a strikeout.
Given new life and with Lauck on first and Welker on third, Luna came up with a chance to end the game with a second three-run home run, but went down on strikes.
