'Dogs hang on for 5-3 win over Mustangs

FRESNO, Calif. - Holding off a late ninth inning rally from visiting Cal Poly, the Diamond 'Dogs held on for a 5-3 win over the Mustangs on Tuesday at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.

The Mustangs tallied one run in the ninth and threatened for more loading the bases with two outs, but Cooper Bergman was able to strike out pinch-hitter Matthias Haas to preserve the Bulldog victory.

Fresno State (23-22) tallied nine hits offensively with leadoff hitter Andrew Kachel belting a pair of home runs and driving in three of the 'Dogs five runs.

Ivan Luna added two hits while Josh Lauck smacked his 10th home run of the season.

On the pitching side, Trevor Garcia earned his fourth win of the season allowing only a pair of hits over the first three innings. He gave way to three innings from Tommy Hopfe, who struck out a career-high four, and one inning apiece from Nikoh Mitchell, Zach Statzer and Bergman.

How It Happened
A solo home run in the second by Lauck got the scoring started for the Bulldogs before a three-run fourth extended their lead to 4-0.

A leadoff single by Bobby Blandford put one on for Kachel who sent a ball over right-center wall and Luna added a two-out RBI single.

The Mustangs jumped on the board in the fifth taking advantage of a Bulldog fielding error, but the 'Dogs got the run back in the bottom of the frame with a solo bomb from Kachel to right.

Cal Poly cut the 'Dogs lead to 5-2 with a leadoff home run in the sixth by Brooks Lee and added a run in the ninth on an RBI single back to the pitcher by pinch-hitter Taison Corio. With the bases loaded for Haas, Bergman was able to freeze the freshman to keep the Mustangs from further damage.
