'Dogs drop 2-1 result to Beavers in home opener
8/25/2022 11:17:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FRESNO, Calif. – Despite facing a 2-0 deficit in the opening 20 minutes, Fresno State, driven by the energy from its crowd in its first home game since last October, made noticeable adjustments at halftime but ultimately came up short in a 2-1 defeat to Oregon State Thursday night at the Fresno State Soccer Stadium. It is the second loss for the Bulldogs against a Pac-12 opponent in the last week.
How It Happened
Oregon State struck first in the fourth minute as McKenna Martinez hit a curling shot outside the box that got up and around Bulldog keeper Kaydence Cortez-Garcia, who was making her first career start. The freshman was under constant pressure as early from the Beaver attack, and fifteen minutes and six shots later, OSU doubled their advantage through Gwen Jacobs, with Martinez finding her open in the six.
While the Beavers continued to push through the first half, the Bulldogs used adjustments at halftime to pull themselves back into the game. In the 58th minute, Kaelyn Miller took a turn just inside Oregon State's half and released Ciara Wilson down the right side just before a tackle came in. Wilson took a one-touch centering pass that was buried in the back of the net by Kassandra Ceja.
With the Bulldogs pushing for an equalizer, the Beavers tried to catch the 'Dogs on the break several times. Ella Wilson came up with a big 1-on-1 save in the 83rd minute to leave for a draw on the table but an equalizer didn't come.
Scoring Summary
3:10 – OSU – McKenna Martinez
18:08 – OSU – Gwen Jacobs (McKenna Martinez)
57:30 – FS – Kassandra Ceja (Ciara Wilson, Kaelyn Miller)
