'Dogs hold down Falcons to a conference opener victory

FRESNO Calif.- Fresno State women's basketball team holds down the Air Force Falcons to take a conference opener victory at the Save Mart Center Saturday afternoon, 59-49.Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
Taking off on a hot start Keely Brown would shoot from beyond the arc to get the 'Dogs going. Fresno State shot 58% from the field in the first ten minutes of play. Brown would record double-digit points by the end of the first quarter after putting up two 3-pointers. 5-0 run to end the quarter would give the Bulldogs a six point lead.Â
Bulldogs built an eleven point lead off of a three-pointer by Tamia Stricklin to start the second. Fresno State would see their offensive pace slow down, going scoreless for over six minutes. The Falcons would work to break the 'Dogs lead to only five. With less than two minutes to play, a steal by Franka Wittenberg to Brown gets the Bulldogs back on the board. But a shooting foul and fast break layup would inch the Falcons closer, within two at the half.Â
With only a two point lead to hold the 'Dogs over at the start of the second half. Air Force would see a shift to open the second half to the 'Dogs two point lead. Fresno State would hold Air Force's attempt at the lead till the last minute. A three-pointer by Air Forces Britt would tie up the game, 35-35. Down to the wire, ' Dogs see a one point lead to close the third, 38-37.Â
Deajanae Harvey would lead the 'Dogs to victory in the last quarter, recording nine points and going 4-of-7 from the field (57%.) Fresno State would start the last ten minutes with a 7-0 run, with a fast break layup by Bineta Diatta, followed by a steal and score by Harvey and closed off by a three-pointer from Wittenberg. A layup in the paint by Harvey brought Fresno State back within a ten point lead with a minute thirty left to play.Â
