Mitchell powers 'Dogs over Tigers, 5-4

FRESNO, Calif. - Withstanding a late rally from visiting Pacific, the Diamond 'Dogs topped the Tigers, 5-4 on Tuesday evening at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.

Fresno State (6-5) jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but three runs for the Tigers in the eighth innings brought the visitors within one as the 'Dogs were able to hold off Pacific for the win.

The Bulldogs totaled nine hits in the contest with five extra-base knocks, getting a pair of doubles from Sammy Augustine, a two-run home run from Nikoh Mitchell, a double from Tommy Hopfe and a triple from Grady Morgan.

On the mound, Roman Angelo got the start, tossing a pair of innings allowing a hit and struck out three before giving way to six relievers.

Jack Anker earned his first win as a Bulldog tossing the next two innings before giving way to Victor Arreola, Mitchell, Zach Statzer, Trevor Garcia and Hopfe who converted his third save of the season.

How It Happened
After a scoreless first three innings, the Bulldogs got the scoring started with a pair of runs in the fourth with Ben Newton coming home to score on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from Marco Pirruccello.

A solo home run by Pacific got the Tigers on the board in the fifth, but the 'Dogs answered back in the bottom of the frame with Augustine scoring after a Pacific throwing error.

A leadoff single by Augustine to start the seventh put one runner on base for Mitchell, who drilled his second home run of the season to give the 'Dogs a 5-1 lead.

A three-run eighth inning for the Tigers cut the 'Dogs lead down to 5-4, but a game-saving relay for the third out from Augustine in left to Travis Welker at shortstop to Tyler Davis at home got the potential game-tying run out at the dish.

A two-out single in the ninth put the tying run on base for Pacific, but Hopfe was able to get a groundout to Newton at second to seal the win.

The 'Dogs return to action this weekend hosting Nevada (6-5) on Friday through Sunday.
