CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team triumphed over Bethune-Cookman 6-4 on the second day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
The Bulldogs (7-5) outhit the Wildcats (4-13), recording 9 hits to Bethune-Cookman's 7.
Leadoff hitter Natalie Elias led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 and scoring two runs. Senior Hannah Ortega earned the start in the circle against her former team, picking up her first win of the season after throwing 3.0 innings. Sophomore Faith Jordan sealed the victory, earning her second save of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State had a hot start, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Natalie Elias led off with a single to center field, then a walk drawn by Kennedy Bunker put two runners on base. Lauren Almeida drove in Elias with an infield single, and a fielder's choice allowed Bunker to cross the plate.
The 'Dogs kept their foot on the gas in the second inning, adding three more runs. Alyssa Rebolledo led off with a double to left field, setting the tone, and Kiara Sipe followed with an RBI-single to bring Rebolledo home. Elias beat out a throw to first after laying down a bunt, putting runners on the corners as Sipe advanced to third. Elias then stole second, and Madison Rey brought both runners in with a single to left field. Fresno State finished the inning with a 5-0 lead.
Bethune-Cookman found an offensive spark in the top of the fourth inning, back-to-back singles and a batter hit by a pitch would load the bases without an out. Two errors on a fielder's choice would allow three runs to score.
The Wildcats made it a one-run game in the next inning. After hitting two clutch two-out singles and drawing a walk, a run scored off another error by the Bulldogs' defense.
After being held without a run for four innings, Fresno State added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kealani Nitta hit a two-out infield single, a fielding error on a fielder's choice moved her to second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Nitta scored on a passed ball to give Fresno State a 6-4 lead going into the seventh.
Bethune-Cookman had runners on second and third with no outs, but Jordan and the defense retired the next three batters to secure the win.
