'Dogs split doubleheader with Rams

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Fresno State softball team (31-18, 14-7 MW) split the doubleheader with Colorado State, losing 7-0 in the first game before winning 8-3 in the second.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
The Rams outhit the Bulldogs 8-4. Fresno State's four hits came off the bats of four different players. Three pitchers saw time in the circle.
After a scoreless first inning, Colorado State took a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the second. The Rams collected seven hits in the inning, including six consecutive ones.
Fresno State looked to respond in the third. Alyssa Orr led off the inning with a double to center field, but the next three batters were retired in order with flyouts.
Neither team scored for the remainder of the game, and the Rams won Game 1, 7-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
The Bulldogs had their second-most hits of the season, outhitting the Rams 13-6. Marissa Montelongo led the team at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Serayah Neiss pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs, dishing four strikeouts. The junior improves to 15-5 on the season.
Colorado State jumped to an early 2-0 lead, scoring a run in both the first and second innings.
However, Fresno State wasn't going to be shut out in game two. The Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the third. Marissa Montelongo led off the inning with a triple to right field. Natalie Elias followed with an infield single and then stole second, putting two runners in scoring position. Back-to-back RBI groundouts brought both runners home, leveling the score at 2-2.
Neiss and the defense kept the momentum in the bottom of the frame, retiring the Rams in order.
Fresno State seized the lead in the fourth, scoring two runs on two hits. The Bulldogs had back-to-back leadoff triples. Alyssa Orr hit one to center field, and Kiara Sipe followed with a successful squeeze bunt, allowing Orr to slide under the catcher's tag to score. Sipe advanced to second on a catcher's error and moved to third on a groundout. Elias then brought Sipe home with a perfectly executed bunt, giving Fresno State a 4-2 lead.
Colorado State was again retired in order in the bottom of the fourth.
The Bulldogs added three more runs in the fifth inning. Lauren Almeida singled up the middle, Madison Rey reached on an error, and Orr followed with another single to load the bases with one out. Sipe then drew a walk, bringing in a run. Montelongo followed with a two-RBI single, extending Fresno State's lead to 7-2 as they headed into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Neiss and the defense made it 10 retired batters in a row.
Fresno State and Colorado State each added one run in the sixth. The Bulldogs would hold off the Rams in the seventh to even the series.
