'Dogs split day two of Polopalooza

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 7 Fresno State water polo team split its games on day two of the Polopalooza tournament at the Aquatics Center. The 'Dogs fell to No. 10 Indiana 11-10, but bounced back on Saturday evening to defeat No. 8 UC Irvine 15-12.

Freshman Katelyn Mobley has remained consistent in her debut weekend, totaling 19 saves in the two games on Saturday with a season-high 12 against the Anteaters. Hailey Andress was held to no goals against Indiana, but tallied five in the win over UCI.

Game 1 Recap
Fresno State and Indiana saw a back-and-forth battle for four quarters. The first five minutes of play were scoreless before Indiana ended the drought with 2:49 left in the first quarter. Shortly after, Riaan Bryant evened the score. Indiana capitalized on a powerplay opportunity to take the lead but the Bulldogs converted on a penalty shot from Charley Stephens to end the first quarter with a 2-2 tie.

Indiana extended its lead to 4-2 with back-to-back goals to start the second. Kira Anderson ended the run but the Hoosiers quickly responded to go up 5-3 with 3:35 left before half. The Hoosiers converted on a penalty shot to end the half with a 6-3 lead.

Indiana won the opening sprint of the third quarter, but Anderson got a steal and broke away for a goal. With 6:29 on the clock, Hailey Andress hit Megan Cranley for the goal that got the Bulldogs within one. Susanna Martinez tied the game on a penalty shot with 2:43 left, bringing the score to 6-6. Indiana took the lead with a 6-on-5 goal, and the Bulldogs would do the same 30 seconds later with a goal from Sidney Strickland.

The tie score didn't last long as Indiana scored on its next possession, but the 'Dogs didn't stop shooting as Cranley found Bryant for the 6-on-5 goal to tie the game at eight with just under a minute to go in the third.

Indiana's Louisa Downes scored back-to-back goals in the fourth to extend the Hoosier lead to 10-8. Indiana was called for an exclusion and the 'Dogs took advantage off a goal by Bryant to cut the lead to one. After a steal by Andress, Anderson found Cranley to tie the game at 10 with 4:21 left in the game. Indiana scored the go-ahead goal on its next possession. The following four minutes were a back-and-forth battle. With possession to the Bulldogs in the final 30 seconds, Katya Aleshina's shot attempt from center was denied at the buzzer.

Charley Stephens and Kira Anderson also contributed, helping to build an early advantage. Katelyn Mobley came up with four big saves in the opening quarter.

Caitlyn Mossman drew the penalty foul that set up Riaan Bryant for the goal with 1:53 left. The Anteaters scored again, but the Bulldogs finished with the 15-12 advantage.
