'Dogs have final tune-up before MW Indoor Championship

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State track and field team splits up this weekend, competing at the Battle Born Classic in Reno and the Husky Classic in Seattle.

The distance crew heads to Seattle while a handful of field and sprints athletes go to Reno.

This weekend is the final regular season indoor competition before the Mountain West Indoor Championships (Feb. 26-28).

Spotlight for the thrower
Senior Maria Lawson has had a great indoor season to this point. She picked up her first career event win, in any season or event. Lawson won the weight throw at the UW Invitational. She has finished in the Top 4 in each indoor event this season. Lawson has had some of her best throws of her career so far this season, taking second in the weight throw at the Silver State Invite and third at the Spokane Sports Showcase before winning the event at the UW Invite.

In Reno for the indoor season opener, the Clovis native had a throw of 18.20m/59-8.5 for a new personal best, and her farthest throw since the 2024 indoor championships. On her third attempt, she surpassed her previous personal best by nearly two inches.

A new record holder
Rhiannon Walker set the Fresno State indoor record in the women's 5000 with a time of 17:15.29, taking second in the event at the UW Invitational. Her time bested the previous record by nearly six seconds and was the fastest by a Bulldog since 2024. Her time is Top 15 in the Mountain West this season.

Outdoor season approaching
The Bulldogs near the end of the 2026 indoor season, and the start to the 2026 outdoor season. Fresno State will begin its outdoor season on February 21 at the Sunbird Invitational, hosted by Fresno Pacific.

Last time out
Last weekend, the Bulldogs split up to the Frank Sevigne Husker Classic (hosted by Nebraska) and the Riverfront Invitational in Spokane. A total of 10 athletes split up to both events with some distance runners and throwers to Spokane and multis and jumpers to Lincoln. Janae Heffernan highlighted the day one of action, taking third in the long jump at the Husker Classic with an indoor career-best mark of 5.77m/18-11.25.
