2/13/2026 11:00:00 PM | Baseball
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State baseball team opened the 2026 season with an 8-3 loss to the Utah Utes on Friday night at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
With the loss, the Bulldogs begin the year 0-1 while the Utes own a 1-0 record.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After the leadoff batter drew a walk for the Utes, a two-run homer to deep right gave Utah a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The Bulldogs looked to answer in the bottom of the first. Jett Ruby recorded the first hit of the 2026 season, and Griffen Sotomayor reached on a shortstop error, putting two on with one out. The next two batters were retired, and Fresno State left both runners stranded.
Fresno State cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second. An error by the Utah third baseman put freshman Marcus Nolen aboard, and Brady Hewitt, a newcomer to the Bulldog squad, delivered his first collegiate hit in a big way with an RBI triple to center field.
Utah added to its lead in the next inning. The first two batters reached on infield errors, and an RBI single down the right-field line brought one home. A walk loaded the bases for the Utes, a single and a hit-by-pitch pushed two more runs across. The third inning ended with Utah in front, 5-1.
Both teams were scoreless over the next two innings before Utah added another in the sixth. After recording two outs, the Utes kept the inning alive with a two-out walk and a single, putting runners on the corners. The runner on first stole second, and a throwing error allowed the runner at third to go home. The runner on first then stole second, and a throwing error allowed the runner from third to score.
In the bottom of the frame, Sky Collins smacked a one-out triple to deep center, and Nolen recorded his first collegiate RBI on a sacrifice fly to left. Fresno State tried to spark a two-out rally as Austin Young singled, and Hewitt followed with a walk, putting two on with two outs. However, the Utes closed out the inning with a strikeout.
Utah loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning with two outs, and capitalized on the opportunity as the runner on third scored on a wild pitch before the inning came to a close with a fielder's choice at third base.
Fresno State reciprocated in the bottom of the frame. Cayden Munster walked and advanced to second on a defensive indifference. Cam Schneider sent him home with his second hit of the evening, a single to left field, that gave Fresno State its third run.
After a scoreless eighth inning for both clubs, a double to left center gave Utah its eighth run of the night. Fresno State could not rally in the final frame and fell 8-3 to Utah.
