2/13/2026 5:46:00 PM | Water Polo
IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 13 Fresno State water polo team played a tough game against No. 2 UCLA on Friday, but a second-half rally by the Bruins pushed them to a 17-10 win to open the Barbara Kalbus Invitational in Irvine.
Â
Charley Stephens and Caitlyn Mossman led Fresno State in scoring with two goals each. Hailey Andress, Marit van der Kolk, Ashley Williams, Sidney Strickland, Noa Markovsky and Kira Anderson each tallied a goal.
Â
Fresno State was down by only one at halftime, 7-6. UCLA outscored Fresno State 6-1 in the third to pull away.
Â
How it Happened
Van der Kolk struck first, taking advantage of a powerplay early on. UCLA evened the score a minute later, but Stephens responded with her first goal of the day. Between missed shots and turnovers, the teams traded possessions until a goal from Anna Pearson evened the score at two with 1:34 left before the second quarter.
Â
The score continued to alternate as Andress opened scoring on the first possession of the second quarter, putting Fresno State ahead 3-2. However, the Bruins again evened the score at three 30 seconds later. Fresno State did not back down, retaking the lead off a goal by Anderson. Another 30 seconds later, UCLA tied the game again at four. Williams gave Fresno State another lead, scoring with 3:54 left before halftime but 20 seconds later the Bruins tied the game for the fifth time. The fight didn't end there as Mossman scored her first goal of the game with 3:11 on the clock. The Bruins scored two unanswered to end the quarter with a 7-6 lead.
Â
UCLA scored five-straight goals to open the third quarter. It was Mossman who ended the run with her second goal with just 39 seconds left in the quarter. The Bruins added another before the buzzer, taking a 13-7 lead into the final period.
Â
Neither team scored for the first two minutes of the game, but Markovsky ended the drought on a powerplay chance. UCLA responded just four seconds later, taking a 14-8 lead. The teams traded goals with one from Strickland, but UCLA went on another small two-goal run. Stephens scored at the final buzzer to make it a 17-10 final.
