'Dogs defeat No. 7 LBSU in full team effort performance

IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 13 Fresno State water polo team defeated No. 7 Long Beach State on day two of the Barbara Kalbus Invite on Saturday, 13-6.

Hailey Andress led the Bulldogs with four goals, her sixth game this season with at least four goals. Kira Anderson added three goals, Charley Stephens and Riaan Bryant added two apiece, and Ashley Williams and Sidney Strickland scored one each.

Katelyn Mobley had 13 saves in the cage.

It was a tale of two halves that saw the first half of action an offensive face-off and the second half a strong performance from the defense. The Bulldogs held Long Beach State to 6-of-27 in shooting.Â

How it happened
Fresno State got out to a 2-0 lead over Long Beach State with goals from Andress and Anderson. Andress' first goal came by a penalty shot to start the game just over a minute in. LBSU got on the board with 5:49 on the clock in the first, but Anderson struck again on the Bulldogs' next possession to make it a 3-1 lead in favor of the Bulldogs. Andress scored one more goal in the period while Long Beach State scored two unanswered to end the quarter.

LBSU tied the game at four off a powerplay goal with 6:10 on the clock before halftime. The Bulldogs pulled away with five unanswered goals up until the final minute of the half. Bryant sparked the scoring run, followed by goals by Williams, Stephens, Andress and Anderson. Long Beach State added one before the half to make it a 9-5 game at halftime, with Fresno State ahead.

Scoring was minimal in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs had the advantage 3-1 in the quarter. Stephens, Bryant and Strickland were the goal-scorers for the Bulldogs in the period.

Headed into the fourth with a 12-6 lead, the defenses battled with the lone goal being scored by Andress on a 6-on-5 chance.
