2/15/2026 1:00:00 PM | Water Polo
IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 13 Fresno State water polo team put up a tough fight against No. 5 Hawai'i on Sunday, but fell 11-9. The Bulldogs took sixth place at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, hosted by UC Irvine this weekend.
Â
Hailey Andress, Riaan Bryant and Charley Stephens led the 'Dogs with two goals apiece. Caitlyn Mossman, Megan Cranley and Kira Anderson each had one. Defensively, Katelyn Mobley had five saves and two steals. Noa Markovsky added a game-high five steals.
Â
How it happened
Riaan Bryant scored first for the 'Dogs, scoring in the first 30 seconds of play off the assist by Marit van der Kolk. Hawai'i evened the score with a penalty shot, and a little over a minute later Hailey Andress scored on a penalty shot to put the 'Dogs ahead 2-1.
Â
Hawai'i attacker Emma Vernoux evened the score at two, but Kira Anderson had the response for a quick Bulldog lead. The Rainbow Wahine evened the score at three off another goal by Vernoux.
Â
The second quarter was a defensive battle. The Bulldogs took 11 shots in the period, which all missed as the Hawai'i defense put in the effort. On the Bulldogs' defensive end, the Rainbow Wahine took four shot attempts and Fresno State garnered three steals to end possessions.
Â
Hawai'i pulled ahead in the third quarter, outscoring Fresno State 5-2 in the period. The Rainbow Wahine led 8-5 heading into the final quarter.
Â
Fresno State made a notable comeback attempt in the final period, scoring four goals. Charley Stephens, Megan Cranley, and Caitlyn Mossman contributed to the Bulldogs' effort, but Hawai'i's strong defense, led by goalie Daisy Logtens, who recorded 11 saves, proved too tough.
