Fresno State falls just short against Stanford in series opener

STANFORD, Calif. – The Diamond 'Dogs came up just short to Stanford in the weekend series opener on Friday afternoon at Sunken Diamond.
Stanford (5-4) walked it off with an RBI triple in the bottom of the ninth inning to secure a 6-5 win over the Bulldogs (4-4) in the first game of the weekend.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Freshman Brady Hewitt singled on the first pitch of the game to become the Bulldogs' first baserunner of the game. He was moved to second by a single to center field from Jett Ruby. Griffen Sotomayor pushed Hewitt across the plate with an RBI single to get the scoring started. Stanford tied the game in the bottom of the frame, scoring a single run off an RBI single with two outs.
Stanford extended its lead in the bottom of the third. With a runner on first, Stanford's Jimmy Nati hit a home run to deep left field to give the Cardinal a 3-1 lead.
The Bulldog bats came to life in the top of the fifth inning. Jett Ruby singled to shallow centerfield and was joined on the bases by Owen Faust, who reached on a fielder's choice, and Griffen Sotomayor, who walked. Sky Collins singled to right field, allowing Faust to score. Mikey Boyd recorded a single that scored both Sotomayor and Collins to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead.
A second home run from the Cardinal in the bottom of the fifth tied the game at five, and Stanford reclaimed the lead in the sixth on a Bulldog fielding error.
Faust led off the seventh inning with a single to left field, and Collins followed suit with an infield single. The Bulldogs tied the game at five when Mikey Boyd reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Faust.
The Cardinal was down to its final out in the ninth inning with a runner on first, when Brock Sell tripled to deep right field, allowing a run to score and giving Stanford a walk-off 6-5 win over Fresno State.
