FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State used a pair of big innings and a dominant pitching performance to secure an 8–1 victory over Long Beach State on Monday night at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 8–14 overall, while the Dirtbags fell to 8–16 on the season.
Fresno State was powered offensively by Cayden Munster, who launched a three-run home run and finished with three RBIs, and Michael Boyd, who delivered a three-run homer in the third inning. Brady Hewitt also added a solo home run and scored twice as part of an 8-run output on eight hits.
On the mound, a combination of seven Bulldog pitchers held Long Beach State to just one run on six hits. Wyatt Thornbury earned the win in relief, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After two scoreless innings to open the game, Fresno State broke through in the bottom of the third. Ethan Payne drew a walk and Sky Collins followed with a single to set the table for Boyd, who crushed a three-run home run to right field. Later in the inning, Hewitt came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Jett Ruby, giving the Bulldogs a 4–0 lead.
The Bulldogs added to their advantage in the fifth. Ruby was hit by a pitch and Marcus Nolen walked ahead of Munster, who delivered the biggest swing of the night—a three-run homer to right field—to push the lead to 7–0.
Long Beach State got on the board in the sixth inning with an RBI walk, but Fresno State quickly regained momentum. In the eighth, Hewitt launched a solo home run to extend the lead to 8–1.
From there, the Bulldogs' bullpen closed the door, allowing just one run across the final four innings to secure the win.
