Late Push Not Enough as ’Dogs Drop Both
3/28/2026 6:49:00 PM | Baseball
The Bulldogs showed offensive firepower across the two games, totaling 18 hits on the day, but were unable to overcome timely hitting from the Lobos late in both matchups.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
Fresno State struck first in the opener, manufacturing a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Griffen Sotomayor. After falling behind 3–1 in the second, the Bulldogs responded with a two-run fourth inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Cam Schneider and aggressive baserunning that led to a game-tying sequence.
The Bulldogs continued to trade blows with New Mexico, with Sky Collins delivering a solo home run in the sixth to even the score at 5–5. Collins paced the offense with four hits and three RBIs in the game.
Trailing 8–5 late, Fresno State rallied in the ninth. RBI hits from Owen Faust and Collins tied the game at 8–8, capping a three-run comeback. However, New Mexico answered in the bottom half with a walk-off home run to steal the opener, 9–8.
Game 2
The Bulldogs looked to bounce back in the nightcap but were held scoreless through eight innings despite scattered opportunities. New Mexico built its lead with a two-run second inning and added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth to go up 5–0.
Fresno State mounted a late push in the ninth, scoring twice on a ground-rule double from Schneider and a sacrifice fly by Marcus Nolen, but the rally fell short as the Lobos closed out a 5–2 win.
NOTES
- Fresno State outhit New Mexico 12–9 in Game 1 but was undone by late pitching.
- The Bulldogs were held scoreless for eight innings in Game 2 before their late rally.
- Fresno State drops both ends of the doubleheader, moving to 8–16 overall and 0–5 in Mountain West play.
