TUCSON, Ariz. – The Fresno State baseball team was shut out by Arizona, 6–0, on Friday night at Hi Corbett Field.
With the loss, the Bulldogs moved to 7–5 on the season while the Wildcats handed Fresno State its first shutout of the year.
Fresno State collected eight hits in the contest but was unable to convert with runners on base, leaving eight stranded and striking out 14 times.
Freshman Brady Hewitt led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. Marcus Nolen also recorded a multi-hit game with two singles, while Mikey Boyd added a double. Jett Ruby, Griffen Sotomayor and Austin Young each chipped in a hit.
On the mound, Tyler Patrick took the loss after allowing five runs in 3.1 innings of work. Weston Thornbury provided three innings of relief with three strikeouts, and Will Page-Allen added 1.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Arizona struck early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control of the game. The Wildcats added another run in the fourth to extend their lead to 5–0 before Fresno State turned to its bullpen.
The Bulldogs threatened several times throughout the night, collecting hits in seven different innings. Hewitt sparked the offense with a triple and later added a double, while Nolen recorded two singles. Boyd also put a runner in scoring position with a double. Despite the traffic on the bases, Fresno State was unable to push a run across, going hitless in key situations with runners in scoring position.
Arizona added one more run in the sixth inning, and Fresno State could not mount a late rally as the Wildcats secured the 6–0 victory.
