TUCSON, Ariz. — The Fresno State baseball team jumped out to an early lead but could not keep pace with Arizona's offense on Sunday afternoon, falling 14–4 at Hi Corbett Field.
The Bulldogs recorded nine hits in the contest and scored in four different innings, but Arizona answered with a big middle stretch to pull away and secure the win.
Senior Sky Collins and sophomore Owen Faust each finished with two hits to lead Fresno State at the plate, while freshman Brady Hewitt also added two hits in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State struck first in the opening inning. Collins reached and eventually came around to score, giving the Bulldogs a quick 1–0 advantage. Arizona responded in the bottom half and then began to build momentum as the game moved into the middle innings.
The Bulldogs reclaimed a brief spark in the third when they pushed across another run to tie the game, and Fresno State added single runs again in the fourth and sixth innings to keep the offense active. RBI doubles from Mikey Boyd and Marcus Nolen, along with an RBI from Jett Ruby, accounted for Fresno State's three driven-in runs.
Faust delivered a strong offensive performance with a double and two runs scored, while Collins also recorded two hits and scored once from the leadoff spot. Hewitt chipped in two singles to give the Bulldogs multiple contributors at the top of the lineup.
Arizona's offense proved difficult to contain, however. The Wildcats produced 14 runs on 14 hits and capitalized on seven walks issued by the Fresno State pitching staff.
Victor Arreola started on the mound for Fresno State, allowing four runs in two innings. Drew Townson provided four innings of relief, and BJ Rodriguez added a scoreless inning before Jared Galang closed the game.
