FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State battled into extra innings but came up just short in a 4-3 loss to San Diego State on Friday night at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs struck first in the opening inning when Griffen Sotomayor roped an RBI double to right center, scoring Owen Faust to give Fresno State an early 1-0 lead.
San Diego State answered with single runs in the third and fourth innings, including a solo home run from Tyce Peterson, to take a 2-1 advantage. The game settled into a pitcher's duel from there, as Fresno State's bullpen—highlighted by five scoreless innings from Brandon Thomas—kept the Bulldogs within striking distance.
Fresno State evened the score in the seventh inning. After Sky Collins reached and advanced to third, Cam Schneider brought him home with a sacrifice bunt to tie the game at 2-2.
The contest remained deadlocked through nine innings, forcing extras. In the top of the 11th, San Diego State broke through when Jake Jackson launched a two-run home run to center, giving the Aztecs a 4-2 lead.
The Bulldogs refused to go quietly. Sotomayor led off the bottom half of the inning with a towering solo home run to cut the deficit to one, and Michael Boyd followed with a double to put the tying run in scoring position. However, Fresno State was unable to complete the comeback as the final out was recorded to end the game.
