FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State baseball team dropped game two of its series against UNLV, 17-1, on Saturday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rebels jumped out early with three runs in the first inning before erupting for seven more in the second to take a commanding 10-0 lead. UNLV totaled 15 hits in the game, including six home runs, led by Jonny Rodriguez's three-homer, seven-RBI performance.
Fresno State broke through in the bottom of the third inning when Brady Hewitt and Marcus Nolen recorded back-to-back singles before Michael Boyd drove in Hewitt with a ground-rule double to right center.
Hewitt paced the Bulldogs offensively, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate, while Nolen added two hits. Boyd recorded Fresno State's lone RBI and Ethan Payne contributed a hit behind the plate.
UNLV added four more runs in the sixth inning on home runs from Drew Barragan, Rodriguez and Jack Salmon before Rodriguez capped the scoring with a three-run homer in the seventh.
Erik Rico was charged with the loss after allowing three runs in the opening inning. BJ Rodriguez tossed three innings in relief and struck out two.
