Â
Pat McCann was added to the Fresno State coaching staff on Dec. 23, 2021 to lead the wide receivers and serve as the team’s offensive pass game coordinator. He was announced as the program’s offensive coordinator on Jan. 31, 2023, after just one season with the Bulldogs.
Â
The 2024 season saw ups and downs for the Bulldog offense throughout the year, but was led by All-Mountain West honorable mention quarterback Mikey Keene. Fresno State had the No. 4 passing offense in the conference, averaging 242.46 passing yards per game.
Â
McCann coached his second 1,000 yard receiver since joining the Bulldogs as Mac Dalena became just the 13th Bulldog in program history to pass the mark. He finished the season with 64 catches for 1,065 yards, and first team all-conference honors. Joining him on the All-MW team was Raylen Sharpe, marking the second time in McCann’s three years on staff that he had multiple all-conference receivers.
Â
In his first season as the Bulldogs’ play-caller, McCann continued the trend of explosive offense at Fresno State. Behind All-Mountain West talent in quarterback Mikey Keene, wide receiver Erik Brooks, tight end Tre Watson and running back Malik Sherrod, the Bulldogs ranked No. 2 in passing offense and No. 5 in total offense and scoring offense in the Mountain West.
Â
While still leading the wide receivers in 2023, the position group saw four receivers with over 500 yards receiving including two with 700-plus yards.
Â
His first year at Fresno State was a memorable one as Fresno State became the first program in FBS history to start the season 1-4, and finish with 10 wins. Fresno State ended the 2022 season on a nine-game winning streak, and won the 2022 Mountain West Championship and the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl.
Â
McCann served as Fresno State’s wide receivers coach and pass game coordinator in 2022. The Bulldogs’ offense was pass heavy a season ago, leading the Mountain West in total passing yards (3,788), pass completions (336) and pass completion percentage (71.04). Fresno State was second in the conference in total passing offense, passing yards per completion, pass attempts, passing yards per attempt, and passing touchdowns.
Â
Fresno State averaged 270.6 yards through the air per game in ‘22.
Â
McCann coached a talented wide receiver room in his first year with the Bulldogs. Senior Jalen Moreno-Cropper became the first Bulldog since 2018 to have a 1,000-yard receiving season, finishing the year with 1,086 yards and five touchdowns. First year Bulldog Nikko Remigio, who transferred in as a graduate transfer from Cal, was second on the team in receiving yards with 852 on the year. Remigio had a team-high six receiving touchdowns last season.
Â
Moreno-Cropper (first team) and Remigio (second team) were both All-Mountain West selections in 2022. McCann continued the trend at Fresno State in having at least two receivers selected as All-MW talent as the Bulldogs have had at least two in each year since 2020.
Â
Both Moreno-Cropper (Dallas Cowboys) and Remigio (Kansas City Chiefs) signed undrafted free agent contracts following their Bulldog careers.
Â
The wide receiver room had four different receivers with over 390 yards, and five players with multiple receiving scores on the year. Fresno State's offense featured three receivers with 50 or more receptions and four or more TD receptions.
Â
McCann was hired by Jeff Tedford in December 2021 to coach the Bulldogs wide receivers following three seasons at Eastern Washington. He served as the Eagles’ wide receivers coach and pass game coordinator. He also served as the interim offensive coordinator to finish the 2021 season.
Â
In the fall 2021 season, McCann coached Eastern Washington to a 10-3 record (6-2 Big Sky). The Eagles were consistently ranked in the Top 25 in the FCS, finishing the season ranked No. 7 with an appearance in the NCAA Championship Subdivision playoff.
Â
Serving as the pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach for the Eagles, McCann had a hand in the success of an offense that averaged 555.7 total offensive yards per game, and 400.54 passing yards per game in 2021. The offensive unit averaged 44.0 points per game. Eastern Washington led the FCS in total offense that season.
Â
Throughout the 2021 season, the Eagles' offensive attack set the program single-game passing records in most yards passing, most offensive plays, most yards of total offense, most passing attempts and most passing touchdowns.
Â
The passing attack was led by quarterback Eric Barriere, who earned All-American and All-Conference honors in 2021. Barriere was the 2021 National FCS Player of the Year and the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year. The passing success came with the assistance of four all-conference wide receivers in Talolo Limu-Jones, Efton Chism III, Andrew Boston and Freddie Roberson.
Â
In 2020-21, he coached a pair of All-Big Sky wide receivers in senior Talolo Limu-Jones (unanimimous first team) and sophomore Freddie Roberson (second team). Limu-Jones went on to earn second team All-American honors from the American Football Coaches Association and Stats Perform. He and Roberson combined for 81 receptions for 1,229 yards and seven touchdowns in seven games as the favorite targets for first team All-America quarterback Eric Barriere.
Â
As a team, the Eagles ranked third in FCS in total offense (524.9 per game) after leading during the regular season. Eastern was also seventh in scoring (37.7) and fourth in passing (367.3) while finishing 5-2 overall and 5-1 in the Big Sky with a five-game winning streak to end the regular season.
Â
In his debut season, McCann helped coach sophomore Andrew Boston to third team All-Big Sky Conference honors, and senior Jayson Williams received honorable mention. The Eagles led FCS in total offense for the third time in school history with an average of 524.8 yards per game. Eastern was the only team in the division to rank in the top 24 in total offense, passing (317.1, fifth) and rushing (207.8, 19th), and were second in scoring (40.6).
Â
In addition, EWU's recruiting class in 2019 was ranked No. 1 in the Big Sky and No. 2 in FCS. Eastern finished the 2019 season 7-5 overall and 6-2 in the Big Sky to finish with at least five league wins for the 13th-straight season.
Â
Formerly from Olympia, Wash., McCann came to EWU from Northern Iowa where he was wide receivers coach in 2017 and 2018. McCann, a 2009 graduate of Western Washington University, spent four previous seasons at EWU’s fellow Big Sky Conference member UC Davis.
Â
Interestingly, McCann faced his former team (UCD) in 2018 while he was coaching UNI – with a twist. A family matter sidelined Panthers offensive coordinator John Bond at the end of the season, and McCann filled in. He debut calling plays came in a 37-0 win over Missouri State, then UNI edged Lamar 16-13 in the first round of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs.
Â
However, the Panthers lost 23-16 to the UC Davis Aggies, who would go on to lose to Eastern 34-29 in the quarterfinals. Northern Iowa finished 7-6 in 2018 and were 8-5 in 2017.
Â
Among the receivers he coached at UNI was first team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference selections Daurice Fountain, who was drafted in the fifth round in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. Deion McShane in 2018 and Isaiah Weston in 2017 both were named to the MVFC All-Newcomer squad and earned freshman All-America honors.
Â
While receivers coach at UC Davis, McCann was integral in helping All-Big Sky second team selection Keelan Doss receive sophomore All-America honors from Hero Sports in 2016. McCann was also key in coaching Tom Hemmingsen, Ramon Vargas and Chris Martin to All-Big Sky honorable mention honors during his time with the Aggies.
Â
Prior to his tenure at UC Davis, McCann served as the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Stonehill College in Easton, Mass. He was also the special teams coordinator from 2011-12 and the wide receivers coach and video coordinator from 2009-2011. He developed all-conference wide receiver John Gomes in 2012 along with helping Gordon McLeod and Zaire Reiph earn all-rookie selections in 2011 and 2012.
Â
After graduating from Olympia HS in 2003, McCann played football at Western Washington from 2007-2008, earning first team All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference honors as a wide receiver in 2008. As a senior, he caught 58 passes for 1,057 yards and 11 touchdowns, then Western discontinued its football program following the season.
Â
He graduated from Western Washington with a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sport science with a sport psychology emphasis in 2009 and went on to earn his master's in leadership studies in 2011 from Grand Canyon University.
Â
He also spent time playing at the College of the Canyons from 2003-05, leading his team to a Junior College National Championship in 2004. Prior to that, he graduated from Olympia (Wash.) High School where he earned first team All-Narrows League honors as a senior when he had 26 catches for 460 yards and nine touchdowns.
Â
His wife, Andrea, is also from Olympia, and they have two sons, Damian and Paxton. Pat’s brother, Jeff McCann, played football (wide receiver) at Whitworth University.
