Joe Bernardi enters his first season as an assistant coach on Tim DeRuyter's staff, responsible for coaching the tight ends. It marks his return to the Fresno State program where starred on the Bulldog offensive line from 2006-10.
Bernardi spent the past three seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Oregon, assisting in all facets of coaching the Ducks offensive line and tight ends. Bernardi helped coach four first-team All-Pac 12 selections in his three seasons at Oregon when the Ducks won 33 games and appeared in the first-ever College Football Playoff National Championship game.
After graduating from Fresno State with his degree communications, Bernardi spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons as the offensive line quality control coach for the Tennessee Volunteers. There he assisted in all phases of coaching and recruiting the offensive line and tight end positions. The 2012 Volunteer unit gave up the least amount of sacks in the SEC and least given up in the NCAA per pass attempt.
In his time as a Bulldog, Bernardi led Fresno State to four bowl games. He was named to the Rimington Award Watch List twice in his career and received the 2010 Paul Schechter Award for Courage given annually to a Fresno State student-athlete who has overcome a physical challenge to become a champion.
