FRESNO, Calif. - Northern Arizona went on a 16-5 run over the final 5 minutes 42 seconds to turn a six-point deficit into a 57-52 victory over Fresno State at Selland Arena. The win improves NAU's record to 2-4 while the Bulldogs drop to 1-2.
The loss nullified what was an impressive comeback by Fresno State. The Bulldogs fell behind by as many as 14 points late in the first half but cut the deficit at halftime to 29-23. Just six minutes into the second stanza, Fresno State had wrestled the lead away from the Lumberjacks, going up 35-34.
FS had a six-point lead, its largest of the game, with 5:42 to go in the contest. But that's when Northern Arizona began a comeback of its own. Kara Kleinhenz hit a layup to make it 47-43. Bridjette Wickman added a three-point play on the next possession to make it 47-46. After a bucket by Omelogo Udeze, baskets by Anna Sturing and Wickham pushed NAU up 50-49 with 3:15 to play.
With just under a minute to play and the Bulldogs trailing 55-52, Lindsay Logan tried a three-pointer but was off the mark, and Northern Arizona picked up the rebound. But a Jox Dixon turnover gave the ball back to Fresno State. With 22 seconds remaining, Logan again misfired on a three-pointer, with the Lumberjacks once again corralling the rebound. With 18 seconds to go, Lynsie Blau was fouled and missed the free throw. But she managed to rebound her own missed shot and passed it to Lindsey Foster, who was intentionally fouled with 12 ticks left on the clock. Foster made one of two free throws to ice the game.
Udeze led all scorers with a career-high 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Logan added 14, the third consecutive game she has posted double figures in points. Laura Garcia had seven assists.
For the Lumberjacks, Kleinhenz had 16 points. Wickham had 10 points and totaled a game-high 11 rebounds. Northern Arizona was 7-of-17 from three-point territory compared to 2-of-9 for Fresno State.
FS returns to action Saturday when it takes on Sacramento State. Tip-off is 2 p.m. at the North Gym.
