FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State improved to 9-6 with two easy victories over Embry-Riddle and Stanford on Friday in the North Gym. The 23rd-ranked Bulldogs gave up just five out of 20 matches in two meets.
Fresno State won its first meet against sixth-ranked NAIA division school, Embry-Riddle, 38-5. The Eagles managed to tie the meet 3-3 after the second match, but the Bulldogs shifted momentum in their favor and never looked back.
Junior Ben Baca beat Embry-Riddle's Pat Cadwallader by an 8-1 decision in the 157 division to put the 'Dogs ahead 3-0. But David Rivera (ER) earned a 4-3 double overtime victory over Darrick Duran to tie up the team score at 3 apiece.
Fresno State's Britt Mooney and Embry-Riddle's Joe Hurtado woke up sleeping fans with their 174 division match. Mooney and Hurtado almost fought after the whistle during the second period, a move which caused Fresno State coach Dennis DeLiddo to charge the mat and tell Mooney he wouldn't tolerate such behavior. When Hurtado took a swipe at Mooney in the third period the referee called the match, giving Fresno State six team points. He further penalized Embry-Riddle one team point.
The Bulldogs easily won the next six out of seven matches, highlighted by pins from freshman Marcio Botelho and sophomore Jim Medeiros.
Fresno State beat Stanford 25-9 in its second meet of the day. Like the first meet, the teams were tied after two matches, but Fresno State got ahead and extended their lead quickly.
No. 1 Stephen Abas and No. 16 Derrick Hayes wrestled up a respective division to fill a gap in the lineup at 141 pounds. Regular starter, junior Ralph Lopez, was sick.
Abas had a close call against Stanford's Justin Walker in the 133 division. Walker scored a takedown on Abas in the second period to tie the score 4-4. Abas chose bottom in the third period and got rode for just over a minute, but got an escape to win 5-4.
Botelho got his second pin of the day against Stanford's Matt Twomey in 57 seconds. Botelho, a freshman, has pinned five opponents this season.
The Bulldog wrestle Cal State Bakersfield on the road Wednesday, Jan. 30 before traveling to San Francisco, Calif., for the All-California tournament Feb. 2.
