TULSA, Okla. - Tulsa's Alyssa Shriver and Leela Farr had big games to lead the Golden Hurricane past Fresno State 66-54 before 1,375 at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The loss, FS's third in a row, drops its record to 6-8 (1-3 WAC). TU is 8-5 (3-0 WAC) and off to the best start in program history.
The Bulldogs controlled the lead for most of the first half. After jumping out to an early 7-2 lead, FS led 21-16 at the 8:57 mark. Lindsay Logan paced Fresno State early, scoring 13 first half points. But toward the end of the opening stanza, TU began to assert itself. The Hurricane tied the game 28-28 with a minute left before taking a 30-28 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Tulsa began to take control. After Logan nailed a three to give the Bulldogs a 31-30 lead, TU went on a 9-1 run over the next 2:33 to gain a firm grasp of the contest. The Golden Hurricane extended their lead to 53-43 with 7:42 to go.
But Fresno State was able to claw back into the contest and trailed 59-53 with 3:41 remaining. But as suddenly as the Bulldogs got back into it, they just as suddenly went ice cold, missing their last nine shots of the game. Meanwhile, Tulsa continued to make the most of its trips to the charity stripe, converting 5-of-6 of its attempts down the stretch.
Shriver was the difference for Tulsa. The junior center scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the second half alone and finished with a 17-point and 10-board afternoon. Farr also added a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
For Fresno State, Logan's 20 points led all scorers. Aritta Lane picked up her fifth double-double of the season by scoring 11 points and pulling in 11 rebounds. But the Bulldogs managed to shoot only 30 percent from the floor and were just 3-of-6 from the line compared to 15-of-20 for TU.
"Tulsa's post players were a big factor for them today," head coach Britt King said. "We have got to start defending the other team's post players better. But we've got our next three games at home, so we'll have a chance to turn things around and get back into the conference race."
The Bulldogs' next three games are in the North Gym. The homestand gets underway Saturday against Nevada at 4 p.m.
