FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State mopped up the competition at the 26th Annual California Collegiate Invitational on Saturday hosted by San Francisco State. The Bulldogs took home the tournament title by scoring 122 points, 40.5 more than second place Cal Poly.
Fresno State had three individual champions including Stephen Abas, Derrick Hayes and Marcio Botelho. Five Bulldogs placed second and two took third.
No. 1-ranked Abas went 4-0 with one pin and two technical falls to win the tournament in the 125 division. Abas has racked up 24 wins this season, including 10 by pin and three by technical fall. He has 133 wins thus far in his career and needs one more to tie the record for wins in a career. Abas' brother, Gerry, currently holds the win record with 134.
The Bulldogs go on the road to face Oregon on Feb. 8, and Oregon State and Portland State on Feb. 10. Fresno State returns home for its final dual meet to wrestle Cal Poly on Feb. 13.
