RENO, Nev.- Fresno State, spurred on by two goals from sophomore Eriko Yoshiki, enjoyed its best offensive performance of the year in a 3-0 shutout of Nevada on Sunday afternoon in Reno.
The Bulldogs (5-6-2, 2-2-0 WAC) recorded 27 shots in the victory, equaling a program record for most shots in a single match. That same mark had been reached twice before; most recently in a 4-0 shutout of Tulsa in last year's WAC Tournament.
Of Fresno State's 27 shots, 17 were on goal. Nevada (2-9-0, 0-2-0 WAC) tallied just four in the loss.
Yoshiki scored two goals for the Bulldogs, while sophomore Kortney Lewis added another to go along with a team-best eight total shots. Fellow sophomore Katri Nokso-Koivisto (Kokkola, Finland) chipped in with four shots.
The Bulldogs had little trouble creating on offense in the first half, holding a commanding lead in shots at 15-1. Of those 15 shots, 12 were on goal as the 'Dogs maintained possession around the Wolf Pack goal for most of the period.
Fresno State took an early 1-0 lead when Yoshiki punched in a loose ball for the game's first score. Sophomore Koleen Anderson (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) was credited with the assist.
At the 13:26 mark, Yoshiki tallied her second goal of the contest to increase the Bulldog's edge to 2-0. Sophomore Barbara Davis (Fresno, Calif.) orchestrated a nice pass to feed Yoshiki, who made a quick run down the sideline and beat her defender.
Lewis recorded five shots in the first half to lead the Bulldogs, four of which were on goal.
Sophomore defender Kelly Irwin (Vacaville, Calif.) made a key one-footed save late in the period to keep Nevada off the scoreboard.
The Bulldogs tacked on another goal at the 55:46 mark as Lewis registered her sixth goal of the year. Senior Erin Sayegusa (Honolulu, Hawaii) made a crisp pass to Lewis, who was streaking down the sideline on a breakaway for the easy score.
Fresno State had several other opportunities to score in the second half but failed to convert against Nevada goalie Megan Tarpenning, who ended up with 14 saves.
The 'Dogs return home to take on San Jose State next Friday at 7 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.
