FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State wrestling team lost 30-3 to No. 14 Oklahoma in Norman, Okla., on Saturday night.
The 2-6 Bulldogs wrestled eight meets this week and have lost the last four. All but one of Fresno State's losses have come against a top-25 nationally ranked team.
The Bulldogs won only one out of 10 matches against the Oklahoma Sooners who had five nationally ranked wrestlers. However, one small moral victory for Fresno State was that eight of its losses were only by decision.
Redshirt freshman Shane Seibert provided the only Bulldog win of the meet. Seibert, who had lost his last three matches, beat Charles Jones by a 4-2 decision in the 157 division.
Jones got the first takedown of the match in the first period and clocked over a minute of riding time before the period ended. Seibert, who chose bottom prior to the second period, got an escape then a takedown to take the lead 3-2. Seibert held on to Jones the entire third period and was awarded a penalty point for Jones' stalling to win 4-2.
Fresno State lost its first four matches in the 125, 133, 141 and 149 division. Oklahoma's sixth ranked wrestler in the 125 division, Sam Hazewinkel, beat Christian Bowerman 9-2, then Brandon Hardy beat Joe Stewart 9-5 in the 133 division.
In the 141 division, Ben Martinez and Oklahoma's Teyon Ware, who is ranked No. 1 in the country, were tied 5-5 going into the third period. Ware chose down and got an escape right at the beginning of the period to take the lead 6-5. He also got a point for riding time to win a close 7-5 decision.
Casey Olson kept the score close against Oklahoma's No. 19 Jeff Ecklof, but lost 6-1 after Ecklof's takedown and near fall in the third period.
After Seibert's win in the 157 division, Fresno State lost its last five matches in the 165, 174, 184, 197 and heavyweight divisions.
Sean Sheets got pinned in 6:24 by Oklahoma's Rafael Maturino in the 165 division and at 174's, No. 13 E.K. Waldhaus beat Anthony Rubalcava 11-4. Greg Gifford, who upset the defending national champion in the 184 division yesterday, lost to Oklahoma's unranked wrestler, Justin Dyer, 3-1.
Fresno State's Sandeep Singh lost 5-3 to Austin David in the 197 division.
In the last match of the night, No. 19 Clint Walbeck took it to overtime for the second time in two days, this time against No. 4 Leonce Crump. The two heavyweights were tied 1-1 after three periods, but Crump got a takedown in overtime to win 3-1.
Fresno State takes a break from action this week, but will travel to Davis, Calif., for the Aggie Open on Jan. 17.
