Wrestlers Back in Shape at Aggie Open

FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs had 14 wrestlers place in the top six at UC Davis' Aggie Open on Saturday, including one first place champion, heavyweight Clint Walbeck.
Walbeck, a junior, ranked 13th with a 17-3 record, went 4-0 in the tournament with two pins. He beat Jacob McGinnis of Boise State 3-0 in the finals to win his division.
Fresno State took 20 wrestlers, ranging from redshirts to ex-Bulldogs, to Davis, Calif., for the open tournament.
The Aggie Open welcomes unattached as well as eligible wrestlers, however, only matches between eligible wrestlers from four-year colleges can be counted on official NCAA records. The tournament does not tabulate team scores.
Joe Stewart (133) and Marcio Botelho (197) took second in their respective divisions, as did former Bulldogs Eddie Gifford (174) and Gerry Abas (157), who are also Fresno State assistant coaches.
Casey Olson (149), Sean Sheets (165) and Jatinder Singh (184) all took third place in their respective divisions, while Greg Gifford took fifth in the 184 division.
Five Bulldogs placed sixth in their respective divisions, including Sal Gonzalez (125), Garrett Spooner (141), Shane Seibert (157), Jim Medeiros (174) and Brett Sloan (184).
Next up, the 2-6 Bulldogs will host Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the North Gym.
