Wrestling Goes 1-2 in Triple Header

FRESNO, Calif. -
The Fresno State wrestling team dropped to 6-10 on the season with a 1-2 showing today.The Bulldogs lost to No. 22 Cal State Bakersfield 30-11 in Bakersfield, Calif., before traveling back home to host Menlo College and Stanford. Fresno State beat Menlo College 22-13 and lost to Stanford 28-9.
Fresno State's wrestling program has not lost 10 dual meets since 1989 when it went 9-11. The Bulldogs' last losing record was in 1999 when they went 6-7-1.
Two Bulldog wrestlers, sophomore Greg Gifford and junior Clint Walbeck, won all of their matches and went 3-0 for the day. Gifford extended his winning streak to seven while Walbeck racked up consecutive win number 11.
At Cal State Bakersfield, the Roadrunners won their first match and didn't look back, winning seven of 10 matches. The only Bulldog winners were Gifford, Walbeck, and redshirt freshman Anthony Rubalcava.
Back at home, Fresno State dominated the Menlo College Oaks, winning six of 10.
After a Bulldog loss in the first match of the meet (197), Walbeck pinned Menlo College's Ken Pamanian in 3:36 at heavyweights. The Bulldogs continued to win in the 125 and 133 divsions. Redshirt freshman Christian Bowerman beat Cleo Johnson 4-3 and senior Joe Stewart beat Alfonzo Paez 7-3, putting Fresno State ahead 12-3.
Senior Ben Martinez lost in the 141 division to James Guizar, but 14th ranked Casey Olson got the momentum going again with his 4-3 decision over Danny Castillo. Olson suffered a concussion in the match though, and did not return for the remainder of the night.
Fresno State's Shane Seibert beat Artem Krylov 8-1 in the 157 division before losing the next two. In the final match at 184s, Gifford beat Eddie Conner 21-7 to end the meet 22-13.
Fresno State ended the day with just as disappointing a meet as its first. Against Stanford, the Bulldogs lost seven of 10 while falling to an unranked Cardinal team.
Walbeck and Bowerman won in the heavyweight and 125 divisions, respectively, while putting Fresno State on top 6-4. The Bulldogs fell fast though, losing the next six consecutive matches.
Forced to skew its line up due to Joe Stewart and Olson having concussions, three Fresno State grapplers wrestled up a division to fill in the holes.
Sal Gonzalez wrestled up to the 133 division, losing 5-3 to Stanford's Paul Gross. Fresno State's Garrett Spooner filled in at 141s while Ben Martinez wrestled up at 149s.
The Bulldogs forfeited in the 157 division to fourth ranked Matt Gentry, and Seibert wrestled up a division against Brian Perry at 165s. Another loss in the 174 division put the Bulldogs behind 28-6.
Fresno State won the last match of the night with Gifford's 7-2 decision over John Garfinkel.
The Bulldogs travel to Tempe, Ariz., to wrestled Arizona State on Friday. Fresno State hosts Wyoming in its last home dual meet Friday, Feb. 20.
