FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State held a 13-5 shot edge but could not put the ball in the back of the net for a game-winner, resulting in a 0-0 tie against Utah State on Sunday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium.
The majority of Fresno State's scoring opportunities came in the overtime periods, where the Bulldogs held a 7-0 advantage in shot attempts. However, the Bulldogs were unlucky throughout the entire contest, challenging Utah State keeper Kelli Allred with shots off the crossbar and post.
Instead, the Bulldogs (6-8-2, 3-1-1 WAC) would have to settle for their second 0-0 tie at home in the month of October. Fresno State has played five overtime matches this year, sporting a 3-1-1 record in those games.
The lack of offense did not seem to disappoint the enthusiastic CJSL Day crowd, which totaled 3,141 for Fresno State's largest turnout of the year.
Freshman Alison Sill looked as if she would score the game-winner on multiple occasions, leading all players with a career-high six shots as she tallied several near-misses. Junior Cortney Sobrero added three shots for the `Dogs.
The match was extremely physical from the outset, with Fresno State and Utah State (5-8-4, 2-2-1 WAC) battling hard for every ball. The scoreless first period ended with an even 2-2 shot count.
The second half saw slightly more offense, with the `Dogs owning a 4-3 edge in attempts. Fresno State's best chance possibly came with under 10 seconds remaining in regulation, as Sill's header carried over the top of the crossbar after she had a good look at the net.
At the start of the first overtime, Fresno State appeared to break through once again. Senior Koleen Anderson's header was knocked away at the last minute by Utah State's Allred, who failed to control the ball in a scrum near the goal. Sill then followed with a shot attempt that clanked off the post.
Sill had another chance in the opening minute of the second overtime, taking a cross from junior Antonea Lugo and firing another shot off the corner of the goal. Utah State's Allred also made a nice save on a header from junior Rochelle Jagdeo late in the period.
Otherwise, the Bulldog backline held strong throughout the match and did not allow Utah State to generate much of an organized scoring threat. Junior keeper Angie Larsen made three saves between the posts and has not allowed a goal in four straight matches.
Fresno State plays its final home match of the year on Friday, Oct. 28, when it hosts San Jose State at 7 p.m. on senior night at Bulldog Stadium.
