Wrestling Opens Season At The Fullerton Open

Fresno, Calif. - The Shawn Charles era marked its official beginning Saturday as the Bulldogs competed in the Fullerton Open, one of the largest open tournaments in the country. Fresno State had an impressive showing, led by Oregon transfer Cody Parker, who was the runner-up in the heavyweight division. Overall, the Bulldogs had 10 wrestlers place in the day-long tournament.
The Bulldogs had their most impressive team showing in the 125-pound weight class, where three wrestlers placed. Corey Borges won a default decision over Sean Carlson in the third place match, and Paul Ruiz finished eighth in the weight class. The Bulldogs also had two wrestlers place in the heavyweight division, as Wade Sauer finished in third place, just behind Parker.
Other top finishers for the Bulldogs included Darrell Goodpaster and Dan Cadwallader, who finished in fourth place at 133 and 141 pounds respectively, Garrett Spooner who finished in fifth place at 141 pounds and Sean Sheets, who placed sixth at 165 pounds. The Bulldog finishers were rounded out by Greg Gifford, who took fourth place in the 184 pound weight class.
Fresno State begins their home schedule and dual season in three weeks, when they host Western Region rival Wyoming at 2 p.m. in the North Gym. Prior to that match, the Bulldogs will attend one more tournament, the prestigious Las Vegas Tournament on December 2-3.
