Fresno, Calif. - Greg Gifford was the highlight of a tough night for the Fresno State wrestling squad, upsetting No. 9 C.B. Dollaway of the Sun Devils as the Bulldogs fell to Arizona State 46-9 in Glendale. The two teams wrestled away from the university as part of a prior agreement, but it didn't end up working to the Bulldogs' advantage as the team was only able to get Gifford's win and a forfeit at 125 pounds.
Continuing to forfeit two weights, the Bulldogs gave away 141 pounds and 174 pounds, trying a different lineup against the Sun Devils, pushing up Garrett Spooner, Dustin Rocha and Darrell Goodpaster one weight each, but they were unable to convert in the new classes, losing by a technical fall and then two pinfalls, putting the Bulldogs in a 35-6 hole after Cory Borges accepted a forfeit at 125 pounds, before Sean Carlson was pinned at 133.
Greg Gifford continued to showcase why he is the tops on the team in wins, grabbing his 25th of the season on Friday in an upset of No. 9 C.B. Dollaway. Gifford was down early after suffering a first period takedown, but came back with a third period takedown and a penalty point from Dollaway to force the match into overtime, where Gifford scored a takedown after 19 seconds to get the win.
The Bulldogs return home next week for their final two home duals. The Bulldogs first face Stanford on Wednesday in the North Gym, before closing out the dual season on Saturday night against UC Davis. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
