Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State began their first weekend of competition in 2007 with two events, hosting the 2007 Weight Pentathlon and traveling to the United States Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev. The Bulldogs combined for three winners, sweeping the weight events and one of six pole vault competitions.
Samantha Modeste was the big winner for the Bulldogs in the first week of competition in indoor season. Modeste, a senior, won her group in competition over the weekend, crossing the bar at 12-3.5 to easily set a personal best in her first opportunity of the season.
Meanwhile, back in Fresno, the Bulldogs welcomed 55 participants for the annual weight pentathlon, an individual event to kick off the year with unattached competition in all five throwing events: Hammer, Discus, Javelin, Weight and Shotput. Senior Dave Endler won the men's competition, beating fellow Bulldogs Oscar Rodriquez and Carl Spencer while winning four of the five individual disciplines.
On the women's side, Katie Richardson edged out Aspen Marshall in another matchup between Bulldogs. Richardson's high totals in the Discus and Javelin helped pace her to the win over Marshall, who had the top shotput mark on the day.
The team will next return to action, as the women's indoor squad heads to Colorado Springs for the US Air Force Invitational.
