Bulldogs perform well at USC Invite

FRESNO, Calif. - A compact Fresno State track and field team competed at the USC Invitational Saturday, March 22, 2008 in Los Angeles, just two days after a dual meet against Mt. SAC.
Sophomore Roxanne Sellick had Fresno State's top performance of the day, winning the 1,500m run. Sellick timed in at 4:30.08, finishing ahead of the other 39 competitors for the first-place finish.
Freshmen Rosario Sanchez and Kayla Xavier went one-two in the first section of the shot put. Sanchez's throw of 49-5.75 qualifies her for the NCAA Regional.
Tiera Hilliard, a freshman, took second in the 42-person 400m dash, crossing at 54.66, .05 of a second off the NCAA Regional qualifying mark.
Sharon Ayala tossed the hammer throw 201-9 to take silver in the first section of the event, breaking her own school record in the event and re-qualifying for the NCAA Regional.
Senior Meredith Hawkins timed in at 10:09.19 in the 3,000m run for fifth.
The Bulldog's 4x400m relay team brought home second in the event behind host-USC. The 4x100m relay team placed fourth at 46.47.
On the men's side, sophomore Val-Pierre Dai'Re qualified for the NCAA Regional in the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.07, good enough for third at the meet. He also placed fifth in the 110m hurdles.
Frank Sanders also took third in his signature event, the 800m run, with a time of 1:51.62.
Oscar Rodriguez also brought home bronze, with a NCAA Regional-qualifying mark of 56-6 in the shot put. Brian Vazquez's toss of 191-5 in the hammer throw was good enough for fifth.
Freshman Erick Garcia placed fourth in the 3,000m run with a time of 8:38.63.
The Bulldogs host the Cal-Nevada Championships beginning Friday.
