Heidi Gjoen led Fresno State swimmers in the 2009 edition of the WAC Championships Feb. 25-28 in San Antonio, Texas in her first conference championship event of her career. Gjoen kicked off the four-day championship schedule with a solid lead off in the 200 medley relay event that finished one-half a second short of breaking a Fresno State school record on Wednesday night. Day two, Gjoen was one of the first Bulldogs to advance to the finals of the 500 freestyle event, a 20-lap distance race. She earned a lifetime best time of 5:06.82 in the event. Gjoen continued to prevail into day three, as she swam a strong 100 backstroke preliminary to earn herself a coveted spot in the finals later that evening. In the finals, Gjoen placed fifth and again closed in on a second school record just eight-tenths off the 100 backstroke record that was set in the 2000-2001 season. She placed fifth in 5:06.82 in the event, which earned the `Dogs 14 points and podium recognition. Gjoen concluded the WAC Championships by shattering a nearly decade-old school record in the 200 backstroke finals with a time of 2:00.65 that earned her a third place finish, first-team All-WAC honors and a second podium appearance.
