Five Dogs Win at Cal Poly Invite

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's and women's track and field team traveled to San Luis Obispo, Calif. to compete in the Cal Poly Invite where five Bulldogs won individual titles and multiple set personal bests.

"All-in-all we had a good weekend," said head coach Scott Winsor. "We took a large group of athletes and got a lot of them some work in events other than their main ones. That way we (the coaching staff) could get to look at them in different events. We look for competitiveness, and those athletes getting a good workout and giving everything they have."
The women opened the Cal Poly Invite with strong showings in the throwing events.
J'Quyra Moncur-Blue kicked off with the hammer throw and a first place finish with a mark of 184-2.5 (56.15m). Moncur-Blue ranked second in the Western Athletic Conference in the hammer throw event and has earned a WAC women's outdoor field athlete of the week earlier this season.
The Dogs went 1-2 in the shot put event. Meagan McKee won the throwing event with a personal best mark of 44-1.75 (13.46m). Her performance also ranked fifth-best in the WAC. Right behind her in second was AnaManu Folau who marked a 36-11.25 (11.26m).
McKee, a sophomore from San Jose, Calif. (Santa Teresa HS) also won the discus throwing event with a mark of 137-2.75 (41.83m).
Christina Cabias also set a personal record and won her throwing event and the Cal Poly Invite. Cabias won the javelin with a throw zooming to 140-10.75 (42.95m), for a personal best mark and one that ranked fourth best in the WAC.
Two outstanding sprint performances came from one junior student-athlete. Shanelle Stephens placed first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.34. Stephens, who is originally from Compton, Calif. (Dominguez HS), also competed in the 200-meter race and placed seventh with a personal record breaking time of 24.69, beating her previous best by almost one second.
On the men's side Gabriel Acero had an outstanding day. The junior from La Verne, Calif. (Moorepark College) won the hammer throw event with a personal best mark of 180-8 (55.07m), besting his previous best by almost five feet and stood third-best in the WAC Acero also had a notable performance in the shot put. He placed third with a mark of 51-2.75 (15.62m) and ranked fourth-best in the WAC.
On the track, Erick Garcia ran the 3,000-meter steeple in 9:26.53 for his first of the season. Garcia was the only one to compete and his outstanding time ranked him second in the WAC.
Danny Vartanian ran his first race of the season competing in the 5,000-meter. The sophomore finished second and his time ranked him fifth-best in the WAC.
"We Are Your Team!" - The Fresno State men's and women's track and field team head to the Mondo Invitational April 9th in Sacramento. The Dogs return home to Buchanan HS (Veterans Memorial Stadium) for the Bulldog Invitational April 30 and admission will be free to all.
