FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State soccer team shut out Nevada 1-0 Friday night at the Fresno State Soccer and Lacrosse Field and is now tied for sixth place in the Mountain West with two games to go. The Bulldogs (5-10-1, 4-4-1 MW) currently have a 13-game unbeaten streak against the Wolf Pack and are now 6-0-1 at home against Nevada (6-9-2, 3-5-1 MW).
"I'm really pleased," Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "We were happy to get back home in front of a great crowd again and we wanted to show them all what we have been learning and reward them for coming out on such a beautiful night."
Fresno State sophomore forward Myra Delgadillo scored her sixth goal of the season in the 52nd minute after receiving a pass in the box from junior Alyssa Holsworth. This was the second time this year that Delgadillo scored in back-to-back games and the assist was Holsworth's second in 2015.
The 'Dogs were aggressive throughout the game and tied season-highs with 22 shots, seven of which were on target, and eight corner kicks. Fresno State also allowed a season-low one shot on goal for the Wolf Pack.
"In general, we want to keep control of the ball and dictate some of the play," Zwaschka said. "Today, I thought we did that nicely, particularly in the second half. Those are things that will hopefully always be a trademark of what we are capable of, and today I thought we did it really well."
This was the fourth shutout for the 'Dogs this season, and the third for Fresno State freshman goalkeeper Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann, who now has 44 saves in eleven games and has allowed 16 goals. Berwinkel-Kottmann has started the last seven games at the goalkeeper position and has recorded 29 saves and allowed 11 goals in those Mountain West matches.
Nine different Bulldogs recorded shots in the game. Fresno State sophomore Maria Gomez, who leads the team this season with 39 shots, had a season-high seven, with three on target. Delgadillo added four and sophomore Peyton Cline had three.
Delgadillo continues to lead the Bulldogs in shots on goal with 16 this year and is second on the team with 29 shots. Holsworth and Cline are right behind with 25 and 20, respectively.
As a team, the 'Dogs outshot Nevada 22-6 and did not allow a corner kick for the Wolf Pack.
Junior Nevada goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos, a Fresno native, made six saves on the night and has racked up 76 on the season.
"They are a resilient team," Zwaschka added. "Hats off to Nevada's goalkeeper. She had some absolutely world-class saves in the match. Obviously there is a reason why they have a lot of really close games, and we saw that today."
