FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Fresno State soccer team tied Colorado State (3-5-2) on Friday afternoon at The Lagoon, taking a 2-2 draw in its Mountain West opener in the first overtime game of the season for the Bulldogs.
The 'Dogs took four shots with two on goal in the second overtime, but couldn't put one past the Rams' redshirt junior goalkeeper Jesse McGinley.
"It's important to be able to go on the road and score points," Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "We're also pleased that we managed to withstand two overtimes for the first time this year."
Fresno State was down 1-0 early, but was able to score two second half goals to catch up with the Rams, who have yet to beat the 'Dogs in three meetings. Colorado State senior Gianna Bertana equalized the game with less than a minute remaining to bring the match to a 2-2 draw.
Colorado State sophomore Janelle Stone was able to score the first goal of the match on a header after Bulldog sophomore goalkeeper Domenique Banta came out to the top of the box as the ball was sent over her head and rolled into the net.
With 26 minutes remaining, Bulldog sophomore Carly Bracken beat McGinley across the front of the goal and placed the ball in off the right post for her first goal of the season and second of her career. Sophomore Myra Delgadillo recorded her first career assist on the play.
"Myra [Delgadillo] did all the work on that goal," Bracken said. "She went right at the defenders and was able to pass it to me once I got into position. The key for this team is to come out fighting, work together and have good communication."
In the 77th minute, Fresno State sophomore Ashari Hines scored her first goal of the season and fourth of her career. She now leads the team in points this season with three.
The Rams outshot the Bulldogs 12-9, the lowest number of shots the 'Dogs have given up in a game this season. Each team ended the game with five on goal. Fresno State also recorded eight corner kicks, the most in a game for the team this season.
Banta, coming off a 1-0 shutout of Sacramento State on Sept. 13, started her third game of the season for the Bulldogs, saving three, with two of them in the second overtime. She now has 16 saves on the season.
Peyton Cline continues to lead the 'Dogs in shots with 10 after recording one in Friday's match.
Fresno State is now 1-2-1 in Mountain West openers since joining the conference in 2012.
