Behind three Bulldogs who fired top 10 opening round scores, Fresno State is tied for the lead at Poppy Hills
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Fresno State men's golf team is tied for first place with Gonzaga after the opening round of play at the Saint Mary's Invitational at Poppy Hills Golf Course on Monday. Despite tough winds, the trio of Justin Avery, Alex Lee and Greg Gildea carded top 10 scores to lead the way.
Avery led all scorers, firing an even-par 71. The junior is tied for third place and sits two shots back from the lead. After seven pars mixed in with a birdie and a bogey on the front, Avery battled for his score on the back half as he holed an eagle, a birdie, and four pars along with three bogeys.
Meanwhile, Lee and Gildea each shot a 1-over-par 72 on Monday. Both are tied for sixth place.
Trevor Clayton carded a 4-over-par 75 and Russell Takeuchi posted a 5-over-par 76. Clayton is tied for 29th while Takeuchi is tied for 44th.
As a team, Fresno State registered a 6-over-par 290 for its share of the lead with Gonzaga. The two schools have a six shot lead on the next lowest score – host, St. Mary's and Oregon State, each standing at 12-over-par 296.

The second round will get underway with tee times off of holes No. 1 and No. 10. Fresno State's first tee time is Takeuchi at 9:20 a.m., and the last being Avery at 10 a.m. All five Bulldogs will start from the No. 1 tee box.
