BOISE, Idaho - Despite a strong second set, the Fresno State volleyball team fell at Mountain West-leading Boise State on Thursday evening at Bronco Gym. The Bulldogs dropped the individual sets 15-25, 21-25, 15-25.
"We were outplayed tonight by a very good Boise State team," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "We couldn't stop their middle hitters, but were able to handle much of their offense pretty well. We had great efforts by Haile Watson and Taylor Slover. We found some ways to score and in set two our outsides started to break through their block, but it wasn't enough. We gave great effort tonight and hopefully we can replicate that against Air Force on Saturday," added Netherby-Sewell.
Fresno State (13-13, 4-11 MW) was led offensively by sophomore outside hitter Taylor Slover who had a team-high seven kills and a .333 hitting percentage. The 'Dogs were held to 30 kills and a .112 hitting percentage as a team. Brielle Hefner added six kills and Lauren Torres and Aleisha Coates had five kills apiece.
Defensively, senior libero Maggie Eppright had a team-best nine digs and Jacqueline Hutcheson and Coates chipped in seven apiece. The 'Dogs had seven total team blocks and Coates chipped in a team-high two solo blocks.
Boise State (21-6, 12-2 MW) was led by Maddy O'Donnell with 12 kills and Sierra Nobley chipped in 10 kills. The Broncos had a .333 hitting percentage and totaled 45 kills offensively. Madi Osburn had a team-high 14 digs and Janell Walley added 12 digs. O'Donnell had five block assists as Boise State totaled 10 team blocks.
The Broncos took an early 10-4 lead in the first set before the 'Dogs fought back to cut it to 13-7 after block assists from Slover and Torres. That was as close as the Bulldogs would pull in the first set as Boise State went on to win 25-15.Â
The 'Dogs rebounded in the second set showing grit and determination to keep pace with the Broncos after a kill by Coates tied the set at seven apiece. After a kill by Coates brought the Bulldogs within 14-12 and a kill by Hefner kept the 'Dogs within a pair (17-15), a 7-1 run by BSU made it a 24-16 edge for the home team. Out of a Bulldog timeout, the 'Dogs scored five straight points as Slover and Torres combined for a block and Slover added a solo block before the Broncos claimed the set 25-21.
The third set saw the Bulldogs take an 8-5 lead after a service ace by Haile Watson. The Broncos answered back with a 7-0 run to take a 12-8 lead and cut it to a pair at 15-13 after a kill by Coates. Looking to cut the set to one, the Broncos won a point at the net, but the 'Dogs elected to challenge the call, but were unsuccessful as BSU went on to claim the set 25-15 to close out the sweep.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday when they travel to Air Force (9-18, 0-14 MW) for a 11 a.m. PT. start at Clune Arena.
