With Friday’s 1-1 tie against SDSU, the Fresno State women’s soccer team is on a four-game unbeaten streak at home and hosts New Mexico on Sunday at noon PT.
FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno State women's soccer team increased its unbeaten streak at home to four games on Friday night as the Bulldogs tied San Diego State 1-1 at the Fresno State Soccer and Lacrosse Field. This is the longest such streak for the 'Dogs since winning five in a row in October 2013.
Â
"I think it was a positive thing for our team," Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "San Diego State is a powerhouse in our conference, who has won the championship the last several years in a row. Whenever you face them, you have to get anything that you can out of them and we are real pleased that our game plan worked. Obviously we always want to win the game, but we have to take the tie as something positive for us today."
Â
Through 14 all-time meetings between the teams, this is the first-ever tie. The last Fresno State win was a 4-2 victory on Oct. 27, 2000.
Â
In the 32nd minute, the Aztecs (4-5-1, 2-0-1 MW) found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead, but just three minutes later, Fresno State (5-5-1, 0-2-1 MW) junior Peyton Cline scored her third goal of the season to keep the game even.
Â
"I am really glad that I could help out and get us back into the game," Cline said. "We put up a fight out there. We talked a lot this week about using our defense to help us get the attack. Going into Sunday, we need to be a little calmer with the ball, myself especially, and just be able to attack and get more goals in there."
Â
Juniors Myra Delgadillo and Anna Crawford earned assists on the play. Delgadillo currently leads the 'Dogs with 16 points (5 goals, 6 assists) this season. Crawford's assist was her first as a Bulldog.
Â
Fresno State sophomore goalkeeper Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann started her first game of the 2016 season for the Bulldogs, tying her career-high with seven saves. Berwinkel-Kottmann made her first appearance this season in the second half of last Sunday's game against UNLV and has a 1.16 goals-against average on the year.
Â
"Considering [Berwinkel-Kottmann] hasn't had a lot of play time, we are real proud of her," Zwaschka said. "Within our unit, we try to adjust between the three of them, and we know that when any of them are called on, they will go in there and do their best. Today, Marie was terrific."
Â
San Diego State owned advantages in shots (23-9) and corner kicks (7-0). The Aztecs' 23 shots are the most for a Bulldog opponent since North Carolina had 27 on Aug. 23, 2015, and are the most in a Bulldog win or tie since CSUN's 35 shots in a 1-1 tie on Aug. 26, 2012.
Â
Fresno State's zero corner kicks are its least amount since a Sept. 29, 2013 loss against New Mexico and are the least in a Bulldog win or tie since defeating Ole Miss 2-1 on Sept. 19, 1999.
Â
The Bulldogs are now set to host New Mexico (5-4-2, 1-2-0 MW) on Sunday at noon PT. The Lobos defeated San Jose State on Friday night 3-1.
